What is EFT and How Does It Work?
EFT is an Energy Field Therapy that utilizes a simple tapping technique on various accupressure points. It is widely employed as both a self-help tool and therapeutic treatment option to help reduce and often totally eliminate emotional and physical discomfort. It is based on the premise that all negative emotions result in disruption of the body's energy system.
EFT is a method for safely releasing unwanted negative or painful, emotions, thoughts and feelings such as sadness, fear, anxiety, anger, guilt, shame, hurt, grief, bitterness etc. EFT relieves the emotional intensity associated with anxiety, fears, phobias and is used to neutralize unpleasant or traumatic memories.
To quote its originator, Gary Craig, "In essence, EFT is an emotional version of acupuncture wherein we stimulate certain meridian points by tapping on them with our fingertips. This addresses a new cause for emotional issues (unbalanced energy meridians). Properly done, this frequently reduces the therapeutic process from months or years down to hours or minutes. And, since emotional stress can contribute to pain, disease and physical ailments, we often find that EFT provides astonishing physical relief. "
The tapping on the designated points on the face and body is combined with verbalizing the identified problem followed by a general affirmation phrase. Combining these ingredients of the EFT technique balances the energy system and appears to relieve psychological stress and physical pain. Restoring the balance of the energy system allows the body and mind to resume their natural healing abilities. EFT is easy to apply, and is non-invasive.
EFT works by clearing the blockage or disruption by tapping on the end points of the body's energy meridians (while thinking of a specific issue), which sends pulses of energy to rebalance the body's energy system in relation to that thought/specific issue. Shifting energy changes the way the brain processes information about a particular issue, and so tapping while tuned in to the issue is like rewiring or rerouting the brain's conditioned negative response.
EFT Theory & Principles
EFT is based on the discovery from psychoneuroimmunology that imbalances in the body's energy system have profound effects physically and psychologically . According to Gary Craig, "The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body's energy system." It's why roller coasters and spiders panic some people and have no effect on others.
Focusing in on the negative emotion, thought, memory or feeling while tapping or rubbing a sequence of points on the body clears the disruption, restoring balance to the body's flow of energy.
Where there is a block or disruption in the flow of the body's energy system, there is a corresponding physiological charge. Tapping serves to release the blocks that are accessed when a person thinks about or is tuned into a problem or emotionally disturbing circumstance. It is this simple combination of tapping on or stimulating the points, while being focused on the issue/problem that brings about relief.
The Foundations of EFT
EFT was developed in the early 1990s by Gary Craig whose academic training includes a Stanford Engineering Degree. Many of the concepts underlying EFT came from Gary's training in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Thought Field Therapy (TFT.) Personal healing has been his passion for over 30 years during which time he has helped thousands of people.
